The 4 main cities of Fashion Week
Despite its name, “fashion week” actually lasts much longer than a week. In fact, Fashion Week takes place in 4 main cities: New York, London, Milan and Paris. A week of fashion shows in each of these cities, that's to say a whole month of Fashion Week. The most important remains the one which takes place in Paris, which is why each Fashion Week period ends with that of Paris.
One year, two seasons
In the world of fashion, the year is divided into 2: the Spring-Summer season and the Fall-Winter season. And for Fashion Week it's the same operation: one Fashion Week to present the spring-summer collection and another to present the fall-winter collection.
To summarize, we have 4 weeks of Fashion Week, in 4 different cities, twice a year.
The 3 types of Fashion Week
Now let's move on to the trickier part of understanding... In reality, there are 3 different types of Fashion Week: Haute Couture Fashion Week, Ready-to-Wear Fashion Week, and Men's Fashion Week.
Haute Couture Fashion Week
This Fashion Week allows designers who are accepted to participate to obtain the “Haute Couture” label which is a legally controlled designation. To obtain this title, creators must meet very specific criteria regarding the production of their pieces. Moreover, those that are created and presented during this Fashion Week are generally unique pieces that will not be marketed to the general public. Participating in this event and obtaining the “ Haute Couture ” label allows houses to support their image and know-how.
Ready-to-wear Fashion Week
This one is a little simpler to understand. During ready-to-wear Fashion Week shows, brands present pieces that will be marketed to the general public the following season. These pieces, unlike those of the Haute Couture fashion shows, are intended for mass production.
Men's Fashion Week
Similar to Ready-to-Wear Fashion Week, this one focuses on men's wardrobe and the designers reveal to us the pieces they have imagined for men.
The digitalization of Fashion Week
Access to the fashion shows of this international event has always been very restricted, but it is now possible to follow all of these fashion shows thanks to the digitalization of the fashion sector. And yes, it is now possible to follow the fashion shows of the biggest Haute Couture houses by watching them live. You can find all the news about the fashion shows, their dates, and times on various websites such as Fashion Network or the official Paris Fashion Week website. And if you can't attend the shows live, you can always watch the replays or photos of the shows!
And there you have it, you are now Fashion Week pros! We have tried to explain to you how this international event works and is organized as clearly as possible.
